tips

Shooting Great Videos

We've all experienced watching those videos that make you dizzy or have poor lighting. Here are some simple tips to help you capture great pictures on tape:

  • Plan your recording – it can save you a lot of time later and you'll be happier with your video footage.
  • Choose your time. Just before sunset is a great time to shoot video as natural light has a warm tone to it.
  • Always set your white balance by telling your camcorder what kind of light illuminates your subject so it can autocorrect for better colour.
  • If possible, use a tripod. Otherwise, keep your hand steady by leaning on something and imagining that your camera is a cup full of hot coffee. You will also want to turn on your Optical Image Stabilization feature.
  • Consider where you stand so that you don't zoom too much as it can be annoying to the viewer. Zoom in before you get started to compose your shot.
  • Stand close to ensure that you pick up the correct voice(s). Some optical zooms operate in conjunction with the microphone – so if you zoom in, the microphone zooms in as well.
  • Consider good composition. This involves careful placement of the subject in your shot so that it looks good and grabs the attention of your audience.
  • Ensure smooth and infrequent panning. Compose a shot, start recording and hold still for at least 10 seconds before moving the camera. If you have to move the camera, do it slowly and deliberately without stopping until the movement is completely done.
  • When filming moving subjects, end the scene on a still shot so that your audience doesn't become dizzy going from one moving scene to another.
  • Use a wide-angle lens converter to increase your angle of view when filming indoors

Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede started in 1912 and is one of the greatest outdoor shows. It is one of Canada's largest festivals and the world's largest outdoor rodeo attracting more than 1.2 million visitors. Supported by volunteers and not-for-profit community organizations, this event promotes western heritage and values.

This 10-day popular tourist attraction is held every summer in Calgary and features the Stampede parade, world-class rodeos, chuck wagon races, midway shows, Grandstand show, concerts, livestock exhibits, agricultural competitions and so much more.

There are many exciting activities that will delight the whole family. Kids can enjoy “Kid Central” and participate in face painting, plasma cars and speed stacks or they can bounce away on one of the giant inflatable play structures.

At Jaycee Park, you'll find character appearances where the children will have a chance to meet Dora the Explorer, the Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby and more of their favourite Sesame Street friends. Enjoy a variety of rides and games that can be found at the park or make your way to the Coca-Cola Stage for some of the Stampede's best family entertainment.

When it comes to tasty treats, there are a variety of places to grab something on the go or you can enjoy dining in one of the Restaurants or Cafes.

So if you are visiting Calgary during July 3 – 12, 2009, get dressed in your best western attire and head out to the Calgary Stampede for some great fun and entertainment. For more information on the Calgary Stampede, visit www.calgarystampede.com.
