tips

Taking Photographs for Home Insurance

To avoid any discrepancies and delays in receiving your insurance money for your home, make sure you document everything.

Taking photographs for insurance purposes is beneficial for many reasons:

  • Gives you a good estimation of your worth so that you are properly insured
  • Provides proof of ownership so that the insurance company covers the replacement cost
  • Jogs your memory after the shock of a burglary or fire
  • Makes it easy to reconstruct what was in the house
  • Provides you with an accurate inventory of your belongings

Listed below are some tips on taking photographs:

  • Use your digital camera and go around each room in the house and photograph everything you own.
  • Take photos of each room from every angle, including the inside of your cupboards, closets and drawers.
  • Ensure that you take close-up pictures of any valuables as to provide more detail. Place the items on a plain background.
  • Take pictures of the outside of the house, including patio furniture, tools, landscaping, etc.
  • Upload your photos to foto depot for safe keeping OR keep your prints, CD or memory card in your safety deposit box.
  • On the back of your photos or on a separate list, detail each item, include the costs and your best guess of when it was purchased.
  • Keep your photo inventory up-to-date. When you purchase a new item, take a new photograph and update your list.

There are many fires that destroy property that cannot be properly identified for insurance purposes. There are break-ins where there is no proof of ownership for the items. Don’t let this happen to you. Hopefully, you’ll never have to use your insurance inventory, but if you do, you’ll have everything you need.

The Cathedral Village Arts Festival

Since 1991, Cathedral area residents in the city of Regina invite their neighbours, both near and far, to celebrate the gifts that arts and culture bring to their community by way of a celebration called The Cathedral Village Arts Festival.

This event is free of charge and welcomes children, youth and adults to attend. The festival attracts an audience of approximately 35,000 and is one of the largest in Saskatchewan. This year’s theme is “ARTmostphere: Art for a small planet.”

This year’s festival will be taking place from May 18 to 23rd, 2009. It will feature performing, visual and literary arts, crafts and performances. Professional artists will have the opportunity to perform in front of new audiences, while up-and-coming artists will have a venue where they can debut their talents. Avant-garde artists will also have a chance to emerge.

The festival finale will be held on Saturday, May 23rd. A Street Fair will take place along 13th Avenue with over 250 artisans, performance stages, evening cabarets and more.

The Cathedral Village Arts Festival supports innovation and diversity. Thanks to the partnership and support of various community groups, cultural organizations, businesses, schools and the work of over 300 volunteers, this festival is not only possible but is free of charge..

For additional information, email cathedralfestival@sasktel.net or call the office at 306-569-8744.

foto depot: what to do with your digital shots

New and Improved!

We’ve just launched a major update to foto depot, with lots of enhancements and new features, making it even easier to order prints and create foto books. One important change is that albums are now called folders – to remove the confusion between albums and foto books. Folders are where you store, share and organize your photos, just like on your computer.

Adding Photo Captions

Now you can easily add text to any page in a foto book, in a variety of fonts and colours. To try it, follow these steps:

  1. Edit an existing book project, or start a new one and choose your photos.
  2. Go to the page where you want to add some text.
  3. You can put text in any empty frame by clicking the “A” icon (skip next 2 steps), or you can add a caption by choosing a layout that has caption frames.
  4. Click the Layouts tab and select a caption type in the menu on the right side of the well – you can choose from page header, page footer, or photo captions.
  1. Drag the layout to the page and then click on the “A” icon in one of the frames.
  2. Simply type in your text, select your font style and colour, and click Save.

If the text is too small to read on the screen, use the Preview option (the magnifying glass on the frame, or the Preview button in the text editor) to see it larger. Keep in mind that text will be easier to read on a larger printed page.

Shutter Speed

Shutter Speed is the duration of an exposure. It is the length of time a shutter is open allowing light to pass through the opening to reach the film or image sensor. By adjusting the shutter speed you can control the movement of the subject. A fast shutter speed will freeze the subject and a slow shutter speed will make it look blurred as the subject moves.
