How to take Candid Party Shots
The holiday
season is fast approaching and it's the perfect time of year to learn how to take
candid shots of your family and friends at all those festive gatherings. "Candid"
photography is becoming very popular as it captures the spontaneity of the moment.
Here's how you
can add a more candid feel to your photographs:
- Always have
your camera on hand and ready to go
- Position
yourself purposefully so that you are not so obvious to your subject
- Turn off the
flash, then increase your ISO setting, open up your aperture or turn on your camera's
"natural light mode"
- If you
require more light when shooting indoors, turn on ambient light
- Anticipate
the moment and capture your subject relaxed
- Take a photo
when your subject is focused on something so that they are not focused on you
- Add
something to the foreground or background to create interest
- Change your
perspective by crouching down or getting up high
- Use your
zoom lens
- Shoot
continuous images to get the perfect shot
- Use a tripod
when necessary to avoid camera shake
Capturing Outdoor Holiday Lights
If you are looking at capturing the outdoor holiday lights or some indoor group shots,
here are a few suggestions that will help.
For taking
outdoor photos, it's always best at twilight after the sun has set. You have a small
window of opportunity to capture the moment, so get there early. Set up your tripod
and adjust your camera setting so that you are ready to go. Turn off your flash and
increase your ISO. You can also use your "night portrait" or "night scenery" setting.
Include some sky in the background or something reflective in the foreground, such as
snow.
Capturing
Indoor Party Scene
It's always best to take pictures at the beginning of a party when everyone arrives
and everything looks its best. This is the perfect time to take group shots. Ensure
that you get everyone close together and fill the frame. Turn off the flash and turn
on ambient light, if necessary. You'll have the rest of the evening to take your
candid shots.
Have fun and
experiment taking pictures in several different ways to see which one looks the best.
It's important to take plenty of pictures. You can always delete the photos you don't
like. This will ensure that you have wonderful photographs to look back on for years
to come.

Travel to Banff, Alberta
Banff is a
small, charming village famous for its mountains and scenic landmarks. It is located
in the Canadian Rockies just 126 km west of Calgary and 58 km east of Lake Louise.
Back in 1883, three railway workers discovered a cave containing a heated mineral
spring. This hot springs was recognized for its therapeutic benefits and began
attracting visitors to the area. Then, in 1885 it became a part of Banff National
Park, Canada's first national park and home to several national historic sites.
In order to
accommodate the tourists, the luxurious Banff Springs Hotel was built in 1888. As the
town continued to blossom, the area became known for its ski slopes, golf courses, art
galleries, fashionable shopping, terrific restaurants and stylish hotels. Banff
National Park has now become one of the world's premier destinations spots
encompassing over 6,641 kilometres.
In Banff, there
are many local events and festivals held throughout the year targeted at tourists. One
of the more popular events at this time of year is the Ice Magic. This International
Ice Sculpture Competition is held annually in January at the Fairmont Chateau Lake
Louise. It's a three-day weekend that transforms Lake Louise into a magical wonderland
of ice. There are teams of two to three carvers that have only three days to create themed
masterpieces out of 15 300-pound blocks of ice. The prize winning sculptures are
announced on the Sunday afternoon. This event takes place the weekend of January 23
– 25, 2009. All ice sculptures are kept on display until March, weather
permitting.
Other events
and festivals include the Banff Summer Arts Festival in July and August, the Canadian
Rocky Half Mountain Marathon in September and the Banff Mountain Film and Book
Festivals in November. At the end of June, a very special event is held called "Banff
Day" where the town celebrates the area's rich history and heritage.
