Pink Ribbon Campaign and foto source

October is recognized as Breast Cancer month and October 27th is known as Pink Ribbon Day. Throughout the month of October, the Pink Ribbon Campaign focuses on celebrating the achievements of breast cancer research and aims at raising additional funds.

Foto Source Canada is pleased to announce that we will be partnering with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation by distributing foto source branded 2 GB and 4 GB Memory Cards, as well as a 2 GB USB Flash Drive. We are proud to support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in its quest to increase awareness and provide funds for a future free of breast cancer.

Every year, thousands of Canadians are touched by breast cancer. In 2008, an estimated 22,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 will die from it. It not only impacts the person with cancer, but it impacts their entire family and friends.

Today, there are thousands of volunteers at the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation who work diligently and collaboratively to support and advocate for innovative breast cancer research, meaningful education, early diagnosis and effective treatment, and a better quality of life for those living with breast cancer. The foundation funds some of the most relevant breast cancer research programs in the country thanks to the support and generosity of donors and corporate partners.

With regional offices in British Columbia/Yukon Territory, Prairies/NWT, Ontario, the Atlantic and a central office in Toronto, the foundation is able to address the needs of Canadians from coast to coast. Taking Halloween Shots: Night Photography

Halloween is just around the corner and it's time to take those cameras out. There are plenty of interesting subjects to photograph. Ensure that you capture both the subject and the spirit of Halloween. It's an evening of fantasy and spookiness.

Taking photographs of this occasion can sometimes be a challenge because most of the action happens after dark under low-light conditions. This can make it difficult to take a sharp shot. Here are a few tips to help you take good nighttime photographs.

  • Avoid the bright light of flash photography by turning off your flash. Use a flashlight to illuminate spooky subjects from the side or below. For a jack-o-lantern, insert a few candles or place a flashlight inside.
  • Shoot at dusk when the sky has that rich blue colour and set the ISO of your digital camera to 200 or 400. You'll have enough natural light to forgo your flash and capture beautiful and bright photos.
  • Shoot after dusk by using a high ISO setting of 400 or more.
  • Use your semi-automatic shooting modes, such as "night portrait." These offer specialized light settings that can be used to improve the quality of your pictures.
  • Turn on the "anti-shake" mode to help reduce blurring, if your camera has this feature.
  • Hold the camera very steady or use a tripod to avoid camera shake when pressing the shutter release. There are a variety of tripods available today, including table-top models that can fit in your pocket.
  • Get close to your subject and fill the frame.
  • Look for light. Move your subjects underneath whatever light sources are available.
  • Vary the light to get different effects.
  • Bend down low to the subject's eye level when taking the photograph.
  • Consider using a self-timer to help prevent camera shake. Self-timers can count down anywhere from 2 to 10 seconds.

Most importantly, review the picture in the LCD screen to see how it looks. Remember to zoom in to check the image for blur due to camera shake.

This month we travel to the Niagara Region

Come and discover Niagara-on-the-Lake's charming wine route. Consider taking a bicycle tour of the beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake region, one of Canada's principal wine regions. This area is not only known for its superb wines, but also for its lovely Bed and Breakfast accommodations, its quaint shops along Queen Street, endless parks and the highly-praised Shaw Festival.

Fall is the perfect time to visit the Niagara wine country. Gearing up for harvest, wineries are bursting with activity. Come and enjoy the beautiful fall colours, the numerous festivals and events taking place, and learn more about the fine art of winemaking. For further information on events and activities at Ontario wineries, visit www.winesofontario.org.

Taking a bicycle tour along the Niagara River Recreation Trail will offer you a picturesque route. The trail was constructed in 1986 and encompasses some of the world's most beautiful countryside. It stretches some 53 kilometres extending the full length of the Niagara Peninsula. Ideal for bicycling or walking, this trail was developed by the Niagara Parks Commission whose mission is to enhance the beauty of the lands bordering the Niagara River for the pleasure of its visitors.

From Fort George to Fort Erie, the trail is divided into four sections with one of them being the Niagara-on-the-lake to Queenston trail. Each trail takes approximately one to two hours. Markings can be found every 500 metres to show how far you've travelled and to help ensure visitor safety.
