Close-up Photography: How to Capture your Garden in Full Bloom
This is the perfect time of year to try your close-up photography skills. Close-up photography produces incredible photographs by zooming in on a subject, framing it, and capturing all the little intricate details. The focus is solely on the subject, while all the distracting backgrounds are removed. What a wonderful way to capture your garden in full bloom.
Here are some tips to help you take amazing close-up shots of your garden:
-
Start by choosing an object in your garden that you would like to focus on. It could be a flower, plant, vegetable, fruit or anything you find interesting.
- Consider the direction and type of lighting, as well as the time of day. Early morning or early evening usually works well. It's always best to take photographs using natural light as it produces the best colour. A flash can sometimes wash out the colour making a photograph look overexposed.
- Set your camera to "macro" mode to get crisp photographs from up close.
- If you don't have "macro" mode on your camera, then use your camera's "portrait" mode or "spot focus" mode. Stand a little further away from your subject, then zoom in to get that same picture. This will make the subject look sharp, while blurring anything in the distance.
- Consider using a tripod. The camera will magnify any motion the closer you get to an object. This will help produce a sharper image.
- Ensure that you move in close enough to the subject and that you establish a focal point.
- Remember the rule of thirds. Ensure that your focal point falls into an appropriate position within your frame in order to create a more balanced and interesting image.
- Take your picture from different perspectives. Face-on, from the side, from the back or up above. This will give you a good variety to choose from.
Taking photographs of your garden is just one of the many opportunities out there for taking beautiful up-close photographs. These pictures are perfect for framing and displaying in your home. Start experimenting today and you'll have a whole array of photos to choose from!

This month we travel to Vancouver
Vancouver is set between the mountains and sea and is known for its beautiful landscapes and panoramic views. In 2008, Vancouver received the Travelers' Choice Award for being one of the top 25 destinations to visit in Canada. Vancouver is enjoyable during any season with a multitude of things to see and do.
In 1985, the Vancouver Wooden Boat Society was formed and asked to produce a fun and friendly festival for Expo '86. It was so successful that it has now become an annual event. The 21st Annual Vancouver Wooden Boat Festival is being held on Granville Island from Thursday, August 21st to Sunday, August 24th, 2008.
The Wooden Boat Festival gives insight to the heritage of wooden boats and provides instructional programs on wooden boat building. Each year, the festival has grown in size. Starting with 20 vessels in 1985, this event had more than 75 vessels and exhibitors in 2007. These vessels come in all shapes and sizes. It's amazing to see all the interesting canoes, kayaks, cabin cruisers, sailing ships and more.
Highlights of the festival include maritime heritage, family boat building, kid's boat building, shanties, musicians, exhibitors and artisans.

The Foto Source Experience
Knowledge is power. Sir Francis Bacon, English philosopher, statesman & essayist
You cannot create experience. You must undergo it. Albert Camus, French existentialist author & philosopher
At foto source, we couldn't agree more with what these two famous philosophers had to say about experience and knowledge.
The owners of our 181 stores have an incredible number of years experience in the imaging industry which adds up to a whole lot of knowledge. And that total doesn't even include our friendly sales staff.
In fact, Dunne & Rundle foto source in Vancouver, British Columbia has been operating for 79 number of years. Today it is run by Linda and Daryl Newcombe. Their father, Reynold Newcombe bought the company in 1957 from the widow of Mr. Rundle who along with Mr. Dunne started the store in 1929. Their current location was opened in 1968.
Dunne & Rundle foto source has seen the evolution of the photographic industry from before cameras could even focus automatically and there were no such things as digital cameras!
So when you come into a foto source store you can be sure that you are dealing with someone who knows the products they sell. And they have the experience of using the equipment and shooting under many situations that makes it better for them to help you find the right things you need for all your imaging needs – from cameras, to accessories to get the most from your cameras, to services, like printing and archiving your precious memories.

Foto Depot: Bring your photo memories to life
Chances are if you are using a digital camera you're taking a lot more photographs than you did in the past. So quit leaving them on your memory card – bring them back to life by enlarging your favourite photo memories.
Consider decorating with photographs.
Family photographs are important, so why not frame them and make them the focal point of a room in your home – perhaps your family room?
Got some great vacation shots? Arrange them on a wall, either one large single one or an odd numbered grouping of photographs. They'll not only remind you of that great trip but also make your house feel homier.
After all, life is bigger than 4 by 6 inches – shouldn't your pictures be?
From 5" x 7" up to 16" x 24" get your enlargements now at fotodepot.ca
