Taking photographs when you can't use a flash
Taking photographs without a flash is always a challenge, but sometimes necessary. Situations such as a church wedding, concerts, indoor sporting events and museums are not well lit and are quite often "no-flash" zones that will require you to take photographs without the use of the flash. Shutter speed, ISO, and aperture all work together to control the brightness of a picture. This is important to understand when taking a picture without a flash.
Shutter speed determines how much light is registered by the sensor. Slower shutter speeds let in more light, but can result in camera shake and blurry pictures, if they are too low.
If you want to get brighter pictures at faster shutter speeds, then you must increase the aperture (the opening) to allow more light in. The aperture size is measured in f-stops, such as 2.8, 4, 8, etc. The smaller the number, the larger the aperture is.
If you've opened up your aperture all the way and you need more light, you can also get more light in by increasing the ISO speed. This measures the light sensitivity. Please keep in mind that the higher the ISO, the noisier (more grainy) the picture is. This is often barely noticeable when images are printed as 4 x 6" prints. It's best to try different combinations to see what works best.
Here are some additional tips to help you take better pictures without a flash:
- Ensure that you've turned off the flash.
- Look for some light. Move your subjects underneath whatever light sources are available (a window or spotlight).
- Turn on your camera's "natural light mode", if it has one.
- Set a higher ISO sensitivity, e.g., ISO 400.
- Take a deep breath and relax to avoid movement caused by breathing.
- Steady the camera against a solid object or use a tripod as you press the shutter release.
- Get as close to your subject as possible since camera shake is more noticeable the further away you are.
- Use the Aperture Mode feature of your camera which allows you to adjust both the ISO and aperture, and the camera to automatically adjust the shutter speed to give you the best picture.
If you are shopping for a new camera, consider buying a DSLR with a maximum ISO of 1600 or above and image stabilization. If you are buying a compact digital camera look for Image Stabilization and High Sensitivity ISO. Remember that no matter what camera you own, it's best to test out different arrangements to see what gives you the best results. |

This month we travel to Whitehorse
Whitehorse is the capital of Yukon, Canada and is the largest city in the Canadian territories. Seventy-five percent of Yukon's population resides in Whitehorse. The city's name originates from the White Horse Rapids which were said to resemble the mane of a white horse.
Located in the mountain climate region, this city has a dry subarctic climate. In July, they experience average daily highs of 21 °C (70 °F) and in January, average daily lows of -22 °C (-7.6 °F). The average annual snowfall is 145 centimetres (4.75 ft) and 163 millimetres (6.4 in) of rainfall. In the summer, they experience 20+ hours of daylight. The last tee time for 18 holes of golf is 10:30 p.m.
The Yukon Territory observes all Canadian national holidays, as well as Heritage Day in February and Discovery Day in August. Discovery Day originated in Dawson City on August 16, 1896 when they first discovered gold in the hills. It has now become a territorial holiday in the month of August and a reason to enjoy a wide variety of celebrations.
Yukon also celebrates Heritage Day on the Friday before the last Sunday in February. This gives Canadians a time to explore and celebrate their own personal heritage. Unfortunately, this holiday is only celebrated in some provinces.
As Canadians, we will all be celebrating the national holiday of Canada on July 1st. "Canada Day" was previously known as "Dominion Day" before October 27, 1982. This holiday began on July 1, 1867 and celebrates the unification of the British North American lands into the nation of Canada. This year, Canada will be celebrating its 141st birthday!
